Title: The English Clergy. The Emergence and Consolidation of a Profession 1588 to 1642 by Rosemary O’Day

Summary: O’Day argues that during the period 1558–1642, the English clergy transformed into a professional class. Rather than being a loose group of churchmen, by the early 17th century they increasingly shared characteristics of a modern profession: defined career structures, education, social status, and institutional power.

She examines how this professionalisation occurred in the context of the Reformation and Elizabethan / early Stuart England, linking religious change to social and institutional change.
