Title: A Critical and Exegetical Commentary on The Book of Esther (ICC)

Summary: Paton’s commentary is valuable for:

Textual criticism: offers a detailed comparison of versions and manuscripts, which helps understand where the Hebrew text may have been modified, where Greek additions intervene, etc.

Historical cautiousness: he does not assume all aspects of Esther are literal history; he’s careful about what can be corroborated, what is likely literary construction.

Literary structure & theme identification: recognition of motifs such as reversal, identity, feasting, risk, and how Esther builds up narrative tension.

Theological reflection, especially worrying about the absence of explicit divine mention, while seeing providence as implicit.

Cultural and canonical context: how Esther was received in Jewish tradition, in Christian exegesis; how Purim came to be established; how versions (Greek additions, etc.) reflect different communities.
