A Memoir of Edmund Cartwright
VINTAGESTAN BOOKS Title: A Memoir of Edmund Cartwright Summary: Edmund Cartwright was an English clergyman, poet, and inventor who lived during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Despite having no formal training in engineering or mechanics, he became interested in textile manufacturing after visiting a cotton-spinning mill. At the time, weaving was still done largely by hand, which limited production. Motivated to improve efficiency, Cartwright designed and patented the power loom in 1785. This machine mechanized the weaving process, allowing cloth to be produced much faster and with less manual labour. Although his early designs were not very efficient and his own weaving business failed, his invention was later improved by others and became a cornerstone of the textile industry.
