Title: An Elementary Course in the Construction of Aircraft

Summary: An Elementary Course in the Construction of Aircraft is a British aviation textbook from the 1930s–1940s, published by New Era Publishing and associated with authors including J. D. Haddon and A. C. Kermode. It was intended as an introductory training course for students, apprentices, and mechanics entering the aircraft industry during the rapid expansion of aviation.

The book explains how aircraft are built, focusing on practical construction rather than advanced design theory. Topics include:

  • Aircraft materials (wood, steel, aluminium alloys, fabric coverings)
  • Wing construction, including spars, ribs, and bracing systems
  • Fuselage structures and methods of assembly
  • Control surfaces such as ailerons, elevators, and rudders
  • Landing gear (undercarriage) construction
  • Engine mountings and associated fittings
  • Inspection, maintenance, and alignment procedures
  • Basic structural principles and load distribution in aircraft frames

These subjects reflect the construction methods used in the interwar and early World War II era, when many aircraft still employed mixed wood-and-metal structures.

Educational Purpose

The course was designed to provide a practical understanding of aircraft manufacture and maintenance. Rather than emphasizing aerodynamic calculations or aircraft design, it teaches:

  • How aircraft components are fabricated
  • Why specific structural arrangements are used
  • The function of major aircraft systems
  • Workshop and assembly practices used by aircraft manufacturers

This made it useful for technicians, mechanics, and production workers entering the aviation industry.
