Title: Blind and partially sighted children in Britain. The RNIB survey. Volume 2

Summary: The survey aimed to collect information on children in Britain who are blind or partially sighted: their numbers, demographics, causes of sight impairment, additional disabilities, educational placement, and support provision.

It built on earlier work of RNIB (for adults) and was one of the first major nation-wide surveys of visually impaired children in the UK.

Although the exact sampling and datacollection methods are not available in full in the public summaries, the report is cited in later literature as a basis for prevalence and educational provision figures.

Although the data are historical, the survey’s themes remain relevant: the need for timely specialist support; accessible learning materials; appropriate placement and transitions; recognising additional disabilities; and comprehensive data systems.

Later work (for example the BCVIS2 national study of childhood visual impairment) builds on the foundation that RNIB’s Volume 2 helped to establish.

For current service planning or evaluation, one needs more recent data; but this volume remains a useful historical benchmark.
