VINTAGESTAN BOOKS

Title: British Warships in the Age of Sail 1817 to 1863. Design, Construction, Careers and Fates by Rif Winfield

Summary: This book is a reference / technical history volume covering Royal Navy warships in the period 1817–1863.

It continues Winfield’s larger series documenting British sailing warships.

It is structured by rate (first rate, second rate, etc.), classification, and by individual ship class.

Each ship entry includes detailed technical data (dimensions, tonnage, armament, crew), construction info, refits (including when steam engines were added), and a summary of its career (deployments, captains, actions, fate).

There’s also a postscript on the first ironclads (e.g., HMS Warrior) to bridge into the next phase of naval history.

Appendices give useful contextual data: e.g., dockyard launchings (1817–1869), naval expenditure, principal officers, and the wooden steam battlefleet.
