Title: Bugs Britannica by Peter Marren and Richard Mabey

Summary: Bugs Britannica is a celebration of Britain’s insects and other small creatures, combining natural history with folklore, literature, history and personal memories.

Marren and Mabey argue that insects are often overlooked or feared, despite being essential to Britain’s ecosystems and human culture. The book explores creatures such as beetles, butterflies, moths, bees, wasps, flies and grasshoppers, explaining their biology while also examining the stories and beliefs surrounding them.

A major theme is the changing relationship between people and the natural world. Traditional knowledge about insects’ names, sayings, superstitions, uses and observations are gradually disappearing as modern life separates people from nature. The authors therefore preserve both scientific knowledge and cultural memories.

The book also highlights the ecological importance of insects. Although individual insects may seem insignificant, they pollinate plants, decompose organic material, provide food for other animals and form the foundation of many food webs. Their decline is consequently a warning sign about wider environmental damage.
