Title: The Certificates of the Commissioners Appointed to Survey The Chantries, Guilds, Hospitals, Etc., in the County of York. Part I. 1894. Surtees Society Vol. XCI

Summary: The Certificates of the Commissioners Appointed to Survey the Chantries, Guilds, Hospitals, etc., in the County of York, Part I is a nineteenth-century edited publication of Tudor-era records concerning religious foundations in Yorkshire. It was edited by William Page and published by the Surtees Society as volume 91 in 1894. The original certificates were created by commissioners investigating ecclesiastical institutions during the Dissolution of the Chantries under Henry VIII.

The records provide detailed information about:

  • Chantries: Religious foundations established to pay priests to celebrate masses for the souls of founders and benefactors.

  • Guilds and fraternities: Religious or charitable associations maintained by local communities.

  • Hospitals and almshouses: Institutions providing religious, charitable, and sometimes medical assistance.

  • Church lands and property: Details of houses, land, rents, endowments, and other sources of income.

  • Priests and other personnel: Their names, duties, salaries, and sometimes living arrangements.

  • Local communities and benefactors: Information about the people who established or supported these institutions.

The certificates are particularly valuable because they record the financial and administrative condition of Yorkshire's religious foundations immediately before their suppression. They therefore give historians a snapshot of late-medieval religious life and charitable activity in Yorkshire during the Reformation.
