Title:  Conflict and Stability in Scottish Society 1700 to 1850

Summary: T. M. Devine’s Conflict and Stability in Scottish Society 1700–1850 examines how Scotland moved from a region marked by deep internal divisions to one that became integrated and relatively stable within an expanding British state. Devine argues that while Scotland experienced significant upheaval—economic transformation, rapid population growth, religious tension, and political change—these pressures ultimately produced adaptation rather than collapse.
