VINTAGESTAN BOOKS

Title: Continuity and Change. Personnel and Administration of the Church in England, 1500-1642

Summary: The volume examines how far the Reformation and early-modern changes altered church personnel (clergy, bishops, officials) and administrative structures (diocesan organisation, church courts, patronage) in England, and also what continuities remained from the late medieval church

It is organised around studies of different dioceses, offices and functions: e.g., the career of a bishop (Richard Neile) in the late sixteenth/early seventeenth century, or the finances of a newly-formed diocese like Chester.

The editors in the Introduction set out the challenge of discerning how much change there was (in personnel, patronage, courts, oversight) and how much continuity (in structures, local practice, the underlying ethos of the clergy).
