Title: Dan Dare Pilot of the Future by Rod Barzilay. Haynes Space Fleet Operations Manual

Summary: The book serves as an in-universe technical handbook for the spacecraft, space stations, technology, and personnel featured in the classic Dan Dare, Pilot of the Future comic strips that appeared in Eagle magazine during the 1950s and 1960s.

Rather than retelling the comic stories, the manual:

  • Explains the history and organization of the Interplanet Space Fleet.
  • Describes how humanity developed spaceflight, colonized the Moon and Mars, and expanded into the Solar System.
  • Provides detailed cutaway diagrams of famous spacecraft such as the Anastasia, Tempus Frangit, Nimbus, and Zylbat, showing their engines, crew compartments, weapons, and support systems.
  • Profiles major characters including Dan Dare, Digby, Sir Hubert Guest, Professor Peabody, and their allies and enemies.
  • Examines the technology behind propulsion, communications, life support, and defensive systems.
  • Describes the alien civilizations encountered during Dan Dare's missions, especially the Mekon and the Treens.
  • Presents a chronological overview of Dan Dare's major adventures, tying together the continuity of the original comic series.

The book is written in the style of an authentic engineering and maintenance manual, similar to Haynes' famous automotive manuals. Technical diagrams and cutaway artwork are paired with explanatory text, making it feel as though it were an official handbook issued to Space Fleet personnel rather than a work of fiction.
