Morris Frank became blind after two separate accidents. Before getting Buddy, he struggled with losing his independence and with the way other people treated him. His life changed when he learned about Dorothy Harrison Eustis, who was training guide dogs in Switzerland. Frank travelled there and spent several weeks learning to work with a German shepherd named Buddy. 
After returning to the United States with Buddy, Frank demonstrated that a properly trained guide dog could safely help a blind person travel independently. Buddy became famous for guiding Frank through streets and busy traffic. Their partnership also helped Frank gain confidence and encouraged strangers to interact with him naturally rather than simply pitying him. 
Frank then devoted himself to making guide dogs available to other blind people. Together with Dorothy Eustis and others, he helped establish The Seeing Eye, the first guide-dog school in the United States. He also travelled extensively to persuade hotels, restaurants, railways, and other public places to accept guide dogs. 
The book therefore is not only about a man and his dog. It is also about independence, courage, determination, friendship, and overcoming prejudice. Buddy helped Morris Frank regain his own independence, while Frank used his experience to help thousands of other blind people achieve greater freedom.
