Title: Frontiers of the Roman Empire. The Roman Army and the Limes. The Roman Limes in Hungary by David Breeze and Zsolt Visy

Language: English and Hungarian

The Roman limes was not just a wall, but a complex frontier system combining rivers (like the Danube), roads, forts and fortresses, watchtowers and civilian settlements. It functioned as a zone of control, not a strict border line. Its purposes were, defence against raids, monitoring movement of people, controlling trade and communication across the frontier.
