Title: Frontiers of the Roman Empire. The Roman Frontiers in Wales

Language: English. Welsh

Summary: The remains of the Roman borders of Wales are unique in the Roman Empire. Unlike the well-known defensive linear borders such as Hadrian's Wall and Antoninus' Wall in northern Britain, the forts and defences of western Britain were intended to create a dynamic offensive border to deal with fierce natives. Over 60 small and large fortifications and forts, of stone and wood, were identified, some having been used for a few years only, and others for a much longer period. They tell the story of the long and savage war against the Celtic tribes and the army's policy, after the final and complete victory, of thorough occupation, when up to 25,000 legionnaires and supporting troops were stationed in Wales.
