Title: Furniture. A Concise History by Edward Lucie-Smith

Summary: Furniture: A Concise History is a survey of the history of furniture design from ancient civilizations to the modern era. Edward Lucie-Smith examines how furniture reflects changes in technology, craftsmanship, social customs, economics, and artistic taste.

  • Furniture as a cultural artifact: Furniture is presented not merely as functional equipment but as a record of how people lived, worked, and expressed status.
  • Evolution of styles: The book traces major stylistic movements, showing how forms, materials, and decoration changed across centuries.
  • Technology and materials: Advances in woodworking, metalworking, upholstery, and industrial production are shown to have transformed furniture design.
  • Relationship between art and utility: Lucie-Smith highlights the ongoing tension between aesthetic expression and practical function.

Lucie-Smith argues that the history of furniture is inseparable from the history of society itself. Changes in furniture design reveal shifts in class structure, domestic life, artistic ideals, and manufacturing technology. The book provides a compact introduction to how furniture evolved from handcrafted symbols of status to modern industrially produced objects while retaining its role as both a practical necessity and a form of design expression.
