Gedenkboek Van Het Leidsche Studentencorps

VINTAGESTAN BOOKS

Title: Gedenkboek Van Het Leidsche Studentencorps.

Summary: The book is essentially a history and commemorative portrait of the LSC from its foundation in 1839 up to 1939. Its shows:

• Foundation and development of the Corps: It documents the establishment of the organised student corps at Leiden and its changing rules, traditions and institutions.

• Student life: Considerable attention is given to the social world of Leiden students—corps membership, initiation, friendships, societies, customs and student culture.

• Corps traditions and identity: The book records the ceremonies, rituals, symbols and traditions that developed around the LSC and helped create a distinct corps identity.

• Relationship with Leiden University: The Corps is presented in the context of the wider history of the University of Leiden, including important jubilees and celebrations.

• Important people and generations: Former members, professors and other figures connected with the Corps are documented, giving the book a strong biographical and institutional character.

• Lustrums and celebrations: Leiden student life was closely associated with elaborate historical celebrations and masquerades. Contemporary sources show how major university anniversaries were celebrated through large costumed processions organised by the student corps.

• Illustrations and documentary material: This 1939 edition contains photographs, illustrations and diagrams, making it useful not only as a narrative history but also as a visual record of the Corps.

The book portrays the LSC as a major institution in Leiden's student and university culture, tracing its first century, its traditions, social organisation and notable members. It is as much a collective memory of a student community as it is a conventional history
