Title: General Dynamics F 16 Fighting Falcon 1978 onwards by Steve Davies. Haynes Owners Workshop Manual

Summary: General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon: 1978 Onwards published in 2014. It examines the F-16 from its introduction into USAF service in 1978 through its later variants and operational career. The book looks at

  • Development and design: Davies explains how the F-16 developed into a lightweight, highly agile multirole fighter. Particular attention is given to its relaxed-static-stability design and fly-by-wire controls, which were central to its exceptional manoeuvrability.
  • Pilot-centred design: The book discusses the frameless bubble canopy, side-mounted control stick and reclined ejection seat, showing how these innovations improved visibility, control and pilot tolerance of high G-forces.
  • Construction and systems: A major part of the book looks inside the aircraft, covering its structure and systems, including flight controls, hydraulics, fuel, electrical systems and weapons. The book particularly focuses on the F-16C/D Block 40/50.
  • Weapons: The F-16's internal M61 Vulcan cannon and eleven weapon stations are covered, along with its evolution from a primarily air-combat fighter into a sophisticated multirole strike aircraft.
  • Variants: Davies provides an overview of the different F-16 variants and export versions, explaining how the basic design was progressively upgraded.
  • Combat history: The book looks at the F-16's operational experience, including the Gulf Wars, the Balkans and Afghanistan, as well as Israel's 1981 strike on Iraq's Osirak reactor.
  • Operational perspective: Rather than being purely a technical history, the Haynes format gives attention to operating, maintaining and flying the aircraft, including perspectives from pilots and maintenance personnel.

The book's looks at the remarkable adaptability of the F-16. Davies shows how an aircraft conceived as a relatively simple, lightweight fighter evolved into a highly capable all-weather multirole platform used by numerous air forces. Its combination of detailed technical information, photographs, diagrams, variant descriptions and combat history makes it particularly useful for someone wanting to understand how the F-16 works as well as how it has been used.
