Title: History of the English Turf 1904 – 1930 Volumes 1 and 2 by Captain T. H. Browne

Summary: History of the English Turf, 1904-1930 by Captain T. H. Browne is a richly illustrated, two-volume history of British horse racing, published in 1931 by Virtue & Co., London. It continues Sir Theodore Andrea Cook’s earlier history of the English Turf, bringing the story of thoroughbred racing up to the end of 1930. Browne chronicles approximately 27 years of English racing, focusing on the horses and personalities that shaped the sport during the early twentieth century.

  • The classic races: The book documents the major contests of the English racing calendar, including the Derby, Oaks, St Leger, 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas, and the Ascot Gold Cup.
  • Champion racehorses: It records the performances, victories, breeding and racing careers of prominent thoroughbreds. Names appearing in the book's index include Gainsborough, Manna, Papyrus, Fairway, Coronach, Call Boy and Solario.
  • Owners and breeders: Browne describes the influential figures behind the development of the thoroughbred, including Lord Derby, Lord Astor and the Aga Khan.
  • Jockeys, trainers and racing personalities: The work preserves details of the people responsible for preparing, riding and campaigning the leading horses.
  • Bloodstock and pedigrees: It documents breeding developments and the importance of bloodlines in producing successful racehorses.
  • Photographic record: Both volumes contain numerous black-and-white photographs of celebrated horses and people associated with the sport.
