Title: In a Rain of Dust by David Kinley. Uncorrected Proof

Summary: In a Rain of Dust by David Kinley tells the true story of a landmark legal battle over asbestos mining in South Africa and the fight to hold a multinational corporation accountable for decades of harm.

The book centres on lawyer Richard Meeran, who in 1995 took on Cape PLC, a British asbestos company whose South African mining operations exposed workers and communities, mostly poor Black South Africans to dangerous asbestos dust for decades. Many workers and family members developed deadly diseases such as mesothelioma and asbestosis after years of exposure.

Kinley follows Meeran’s nine-year legal struggle to represent thousands of victims against a wealthy corporation with major legal resources. The case faced obstacles including jurisdiction disputes (whether the case should be heard in Britain or South Africa), corporate attempts to avoid liability, and the broader inequalities left by apartheid.
