Summary: In April 1986, British television journalist John McCarthy was kidnapped in Beirut. He was held captive for more than five years, experiencing isolation, deprivation, uncertainty and psychological suffering. He was separated completely from his family, friends and, especially, his fiancée Jill Morrell. 
While John was imprisoned, Jill began a determined campaign to keep his case in the public eye. She and her supporters formed Friends of John McCarthy and worked tirelessly to pressure the authorities and maintain public attention on John and other British hostages. John did not know the full extent of Jill's efforts while he was captive. 
The book tells the story from both perspectives. John's chapters describe the frightening reality of captivity, loneliness, boredom, fear, changing perceptions of time and the struggle to maintain hope. Jill's chapters show the very different but equally painful experience of waiting at home, campaigning for his freedom and trying to carry on with life while not knowing what would happen. 
On 8 August 1991, John was finally released and returned to Britain, arriving at RAF Lyneham. His reunion with Jill represented the end of years of uncertainty, although returning to ordinary life after such a long captivity brought its own difficulties.

As New: Same condition as a new, unread book. In perfect condition
Fine: Book or dust jacket that is not quite a crisp as a as new book
Very good: A read book. Minimal wear to book / dust jacket. No tears on either binding or paper. No marks or highlighting of text, may have identifying marks on inside cover. 
Good: Describes the average used book that has all its pages or leaves. Light foxing or age toning may be present. Dust jacket may be missing, cover and binding may have wear. Majority of pages are undamaged. May have creasing or tearing and pencil underlining of text. No permanent highlighting to text or writing in margins.
