Title:  Legacy of Death by Barbara Levy

Summary: The book is a collective history the Sanson family, who served as executioners in France for more than two centuries (from 1635 to 1889)

It explores how the role of executioner was hereditary in the family, including the social stigma, the psychological burden, and the moral conflicts that came with the job.

The author uses a variety of sources,  memoirs, press reports, family records, to trace how successive generations dealt with the demands of the profession.
