The notes cover 227 Lincolnshire parishes, arranged alphabetically in the published edition. The resulting volume provides an extensive snapshot of the county's churches before many underwent major Victorian restoration and rebuilding. Historical importance The chief value of Monson's work is that it preserves evidence that has since disappeared. During the nineteenth century many churches were restored, altered, or rebuilt, resulting in the loss of monuments, inscriptions, and fittings that Monson had recorded.
