Title: Lockheed SR 71 1964 onwards by Steve Davies and Paul Crickmore. Haynes Owners Workshop Manual

Summary: The book explains how the Lockheed SR-71 developed from the secret Blackbird family of reconnaissance aircraft and became the USAF's premier strategic reconnaissance platform during the Cold War. The aircraft was designed to survive not by fighting enemy aircraft but by operating at extraordinary speed and altitude essentially outrunning anything sent to intercept it. At Mach 3+, the aircraft generated enormous aerodynamic heating. This affected almost everything: the structure, fuel system, engines, seals and even the way the aircraft was operated. The famous fuel leakage while parked, for example, was an unavoidable consequence of designing an aircraft whose structure expanded as it heated during flight. The book therefore gives a particularly good sense that the SR-71 wasn't simply a very fast aeroplane. It was effectively a complete technological system designed around sustained Mach 3 flight. This is an excellent book if you're interested in how the SR-71 actually worked, rather than simply wanting a chronological history of the Blackbird. The combination of photographs, technical illustrations, first-hand material and explanations of operations and maintenance makes it particularly useful for understanding the aircraft "under the skin."
