Title: London Street Names by Gillian Bebbington

Summary: London Street Names is a reference book about the origins and meanings of London’s street names. First published in 1972, it explores how streets across London were named after historical figures, landowners, trades, local landmarks, villages, battles, royalty, and even jokes or folk traditions.

Rather than telling a continuous story, the book works like an encyclopedic guide arranged alphabetically by street name. For each entry, Gillian Bebbington explains:

  • where the name came from,
  • when the street was laid out or renamed,
  • links to London history and geography,
  • and notable people or events connected with the location.

The book shows how London’s development can be traced through its streets:

  • aristocratic estates gave names from noble families and country estates,
  • industrial and market areas reflected trades and occupations,
  • Victorian expansion introduced military heroes, classical themes, and imperial references,
  • older medieval streets preserved names linked to churches, taverns, rivers, and local customs.

Examples discussed in sources connected to the book include:

  • streets named after the Duke of Marlborough following military victories,
  • groups of streets with classical literary names such as Homer and Virgil,
  • roads named after villages associated with aristocratic landowners,
  • and descriptive names based on old orchards, marshes, or markets.
