Title: Madame Du Barry by Joan Haslip. The Wages of Beauty

Summary: Madame du Barry by Joan Haslip is a biography of Jeanne Bécu, Comtesse du Barry, the last official mistress of King Louis XV of France.

Jeanne was born in 1743 into relatively humble circumstances. Through her beauty, charm, and intelligence, she rose in Parisian society and eventually attracted the attention of Louis XV. She was introduced at court and became the king’s mistress in the early 1760s. To make her acceptable at Versailles, she was given the title Comtesse du Barry and formally presented at court.

Haslip describes her life at Versailles, including her luxurious lifestyle and her complicated relationships with members of the royal family and aristocracy. Madame du Barry was particularly disliked by Marie Antoinette, who viewed her position at court with contempt. Despite her influence over Louis XV, Madame du Barry was not primarily a political figure; Haslip portrays her more as a woman caught up in the extravagance and rivalries of the French court.

After Louis XV died in 1774, Madame du Barry was removed from court and spent much of her later life at her estate, Château de Louveciennes. She continued to live comfortably for a time, but the French Revolution transformed her circumstances.

During the Revolution, her wealth and connections made her a target. She was arrested, accused of helping émigrés and of counter-revolutionary activities, and eventually brought before the Revolutionary Tribunal.
