Title: Merchant Sailing Ships 1850 to 1875 by David R. MacGregor

Summary: Merchant Sailing Ships 1850–1875: Heyday of Sail is a detailed study of merchant sailing vessels during the period when sailing ships reached their technical and commercial peak, just before steam propulsion became dominant. MacGregor argues that 1850–1875 was not simply the beginning of the decline of sailing ships. Instead, it was their heyday: shipbuilders developed faster, larger and more efficient vessels while merchants expanded international trade. Sailing ships remained highly competitive because they could carry large cargoes economically over long distances. MacGregor's approach is particularly valuable because he combines historical narrative with technical analysis. The book contains plans, dimensions, illustrations and information about actual vessels, making it useful not only to maritime historians but also to ship modellers and anyone interested in nineteenth-century naval architecture.
