Continental Navy: The newly independent Americans attempted to establish a regular navy, but they lacked Britain’s resources, ships, bases, and experienced sailors. Continental warships achieved some successes against British commerce but remained relatively small in number. 
Privateers: Gardiner emphasizes the importance of American privateers. Privately owned armed vessels attacked British merchant shipping, capturing cargoes and disrupting British trade. 
French intervention: France's entry into the war in 1778 fundamentally changed the naval balance. The French Navy was much more capable of challenging Britain than the Continental Navy. 
The Caribbean: The struggle was not confined to North America. Caribbean islands were economically and strategically important because of their valuable sugar plantations and trade. Britain, France, and Spain fought for control of these territories and their surrounding sea routes. 
Britain's global war: The British had to divide naval resources among North America, the Caribbean, Europe, the Mediterranean, India, and other theatres. The war therefore became a much larger international conflict after France and Spain became involved. 
The book demonstrates that the American Revolution was not simply a land war between Britain and the American colonies. Control of the sea influenced the movement of armies, supply lines, trade, communications, and the ability of European powers to intervene. The Royal Navy maintained substantial advantages, but the combination of American privateering, Continental naval activity, and especially French naval intervention increasingly challenged Britain's ability to control the maritime war.
