Summary: This was written to help yachtsmen develop traditional coastal navigation skills through realistic chartwork exercises based on Admiralty charts. It was widely used by students preparing for Royal Yachting Association (RYA) navigation courses. 
The book teaches navigation by having the reader solve progressively more challenging problems, covering:
Chartwork fundamentals – interpreting nautical charts, symbols, scales, and depths. 
Position fixing – using bearings, transits, compass bearings, and distance off to determine a vessel's position. 
Course plotting – planning courses between waypoints while accounting for hazards. 
Tides and tidal streams – calculating tidal heights, stream direction and rate, and their effects on course made good. 
Course to steer (CTS) – correcting for tidal set and drift to arrive at the intended destination. 
Dead reckoning (DR) and estimated position (EP) – maintaining an estimated position between fixes. 
Compass errors – applying variation and deviation corrections to convert between true, magnetic, and compass bearings. 
Pilotage – entering harbours safely using leading lines, buoyage, depth information, and landmarks. 
Passage planning – combining all of the above into safe coastal voyages.
Although written before GPS became commonplace, the book remains valuable because its methods teach the fundamentals of seamanship. Modern RYA training still expects navigators to understand chartwork, tidal calculations, and traditional position-fixing techniques as a backup to electronic navigation.

Grading & Terminology explained:
As New: Same condition as a new, unread book. In perfect condition
Fine: Book or dust jacket that is not quite a crisp as a as new book
Very good: A read book. Minimal wear to book / dust jacket. No tears on either binding or paper. No marks or highlighting of text, may have identifying marks on inside cover. 
Good: Describes the average used book that has all its pages or leaves. Light foxing or age toning may be present. Dust jacket may be missing, cover and binding may have wear. Majority of pages are undamaged. May have creasing or tearing and pencil underlining of text. No permanent highlighting to text or writing in margins. 
Fair: Describes a worn book that has complete text pages (including those with maps or plates), May lack end papers, half title page, etc. Binding and jacket may also be worn
Poor: Book shows considerable wear, only merit is as a reading copy. Book or dust jacket listed as poor may be soiled; scuffed, stained, book may have loose joints, hinges, pages etc.  
Ex-Library: Former library copy. May have marks and stamps.

Unopened or Uncut: The folded edges of some or all pages are still sealed together, meaning the book has never been fully read. Historically, printers folded large printed sheets into sections (called signatures), leaving some page edges joined.
