Title: Nord Ostsee Kanal. Kiel Canal by Werner Scharnweber

Language:  English and German

Summary: Kiel Canal, also called the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal, is a major artificial waterway in northern Germany that connects the North Sea with the Baltic Sea. Stretching about 98 km (61 miles) from Brunsbüttel on the Elbe estuary to Kiel-Holtenau on the Kiel Fjord, it allows ships to avoid the long and often dangerous route around the Jutland Peninsula in Denmark. Scharnweber gives account of the history of the canal, including the locks, bridges, ferries and siding areas.

The canal was constructed between 1887 and 1895 under the German Empire and was originally named the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Kanal. Its main purpose was both commercial and military: it enabled German naval vessels and merchant ships to move quickly between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea without entering international waters around Denmark. Due to increasing ship sizes and naval demands, the canal was significantly widened and deepened between 1907 and 1914.

Today, the Kiel Canal is considered one of the busiest artificial waterways in the world, with tens of thousands of ships using it annually. It greatly reduces travel distance, fuel consumption, and transit time for vessels trading between Northern Europe and the Baltic region. The canal includes large lock systems at both ends, several high bridges, and strict navigation controls for safe passage.
