Summary: The book is both a history of the P-51 Mustang and a practical guide to the aircraft, particularly from the perspective of people who restore, maintain and fly surviving Mustangs.
Origins in 1940: The Mustang was created after Britain asked North American Aviation to produce Curtiss P-40s. Instead, North American proposed an entirely new fighter. The NA-73X prototype was produced remarkably quickly and first flew in October 1940. 
Early Mustang: The original Allison-powered Mustang had excellent speed and low-level performance but was comparatively weak at high altitude. 
The Merlin transformation: Fitting the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine dramatically improved high-altitude performance. This led to the P-51B/C and ultimately the famous P-51D, turning the Mustang into an outstanding long-range escort fighter. 
World War II: The Mustang became especially important with the US Eighth Air Force, escorting bombers deep into Germany. Its combination of range, speed, manoeuvrability and firepower helped establish Allied air superiority. 
Different roles and versions: The book covers the many Mustang marks and derivatives, including reconnaissance aircraft and the A-36 ground-attack version, rather than concentrating solely on the P-51D. 
Post-war career: The Mustang continued beyond WWII, including service during the Korean War, and eventually became one of the world's most famous surviving warbirds. 
Restoration and operation: A major attraction of the Haynes book is its attention to the real aircraft restoration, engineering, maintenance, systems and the experience of flying a Mustang. Maurice Hammond's contribution gives the book an especially useful first-hand perspective from someone who has operated and restored Mustangs.

As New: Same condition as a new, unread book. In perfect condition
Fine: Book or dust jacket that is not quite a crisp as a as new book
Very good: A read book. Minimal wear to book / dust jacket. No tears on either binding or paper. No marks or highlighting of text, may have identifying marks on inside cover. 
Good: Describes the average used book that has all its pages or leaves. Light foxing or age toning may be present. Dust jacket may be missing, cover and binding may have wear. Majority of pages are undamaged. May have creasing or tearing and pencil underlining of text. No permanent highlighting to text or writing in margins. 
Fair: Describes a worn book that has complete text pages (including those with maps or plates), May lack end papers, half title page, etc. Binding and jacket may also be worn
Poor: Book shows considerable wear, only merit is as a reading copy. Book or dust jacket listed as poor may be soiled; scuffed, stained, book may have loose joints, hinges, pages etc.
