Prehistoric Lincolnshire. History of Lincolnshire Volume 1 by Jeffrey May
VINTAGESTAN BOOKS Title: Prehistoric Lincolnshire. History of Lincolnshire Volume 1 by Jeffrey May Summary: This book is a survey of human activity in Lincolnshire from the earliest evidence of occupation through the Iron Age, bringing together archaeological discoveries from across the county May begins by examining the physical geography of Lincolnshire its chalk Wolds, limestone ridge, river valleys, marshes, and fenlands and explains how these landscapes shaped human settlement patterns. Environmental change after the Ice Age created opportunities for hunting, gathering, farming, and later permanent settlement. The earliest chapters cover evidence for prehistoric hunter-gatherers. Lincolnshire has relatively sparse Palaeolithic finds, but stone tools indicate intermittent occupation. During the Mesolithic (Middle Stone Age), communities exploited forests, rivers, and wetlands, leaving behind flint scatters and campsites. The book describes the transition to farming around 4000 BC. Key developments include. Forest clearance. Domesticated crops and animals. Construction of long barrows, especially on the Lincolnshire Wolds. Increased ceremonial and communal activity. Moving onto the Bronze Age saw substantial population growth and social complexity. Important features include. Round barrows used for burial. Metalworking and trade networks. Agricultural expansion. Rich artefacts such as bronze tools and weapons. A major theme is that Lincolnshire was more prosperous and densely settled during the Iron Age than had often been assumed. The county's fertile land and access to salt production supported thriving communities. Evidence includes. Farmsteads and settlements. Coin production and trade. Decorative metalwork and weapons. Large centres such as Old Sleaford and the Ancaster–Sleaford region. May later became closely associated with excavations at Dragonby near Scunthorpe, one of the most important Iron Age sites in the county, which reinforced the view that Lincolnshire played a significant role in later prehistoric Britain. Although many new excavations have taken place since 1976, Prehistoric Lincolnshire remains an important landmark because it was the first comprehensive synthesis of the county's prehistoric archaeology and is still frequently cited in discussions of Lincolnshire's ancient past.
