Title: Renaissance and Zwinglian Influences in Sixteenth Century Scotland by Duncan Shaw

Summary: Shaw argues that ideas associated with the Swiss reformer Huldrych Zwingli  especially regarding the sacraments, rejection of “idolatry,” and a more symbolic/communion-oriented understanding of the Eucharist found their way to Scotland well before the fully established Reformed Church.

Those accused of heresy for example early sacramentarians sometimes explicitly articulated Zwinglian-inspired theological positions. One early Scottish martyr, a vicar named Thomas Forret (executed 1539), claimed “as bread entereth into your mouth, so sail Christ dwell in … faith in your heart,” reflecting a non-transubstantiationist, Zwinglian understanding of communion.

The book shows that among Scottish clerics, both Catholic and early Protestant, there was theological ferment: Zwinglian leanings became one of the “voices” within a broader movement toward reform.
