Summary: Twelve-year-old Daniel begins his summer holiday expecting a quiet few weeks at home. His father is away on business, his mother is preoccupied with a gardening competition, and Daniel would rather spend his time playing computer games. His slightly strange neighbour, Barnaby, is someone Daniel would normally prefer to avoid.
Things change dramatically when mysterious events begin involving Daniel’s goldfish tank. A ley-line connected to the tank becomes a gateway, and Daniel is transported with Barnaby into the magical parallel world of Allapatria. 
Daniel soon learns that he has been chosen to fight a great battle against the forces of evil. The terrifying enemy known as the Shadow has already defeated Allapatria's champion, Paris. Daniel has only three days to become a master swordsman and face the Shadow, despite having no desire to be a hero in the first place. 
As Daniel, Barnaby and their companions become involved in Allapatria's dangers, they encounter characters including the threatening Nuttall and the comic Pixie. Daniel's seemingly impossible mission becomes increasingly complicated as he discovers that things in Allapatria are not necessarily what they first appear to be.
