Title: Roads in Urban Areas by Department of Environment

Summary: Urban roads cannot simply be treated as traffic conduits; they form integral parts of the urban environment, impacting public health, ecology, mobility and community life.

When planning or upgrading urban roads, multi-disciplinary approaches are needed: transport engineering, urban design, drainage/water environment, environmental protection, public realm design.

Retrofitting roads or designing new ones in urban areas must consider: how traffic flows affect local residents; how surface water is managed; how pollution from roads enters the natural environment; how to integrate walking/cycling/public transport; how to reduce the dominance of motor traffic.

Monitoring and regulation of environmental impacts (e.g., road-runoff) are increasingly important, as urban drainage and water-quality issues become more prominent in policy.
