Summary: Signal: Years of Retreat 1943–44: Hitler's Wartime Picture Magazine is a historical compilation of material from the Nazi propaganda magazine Signal, covering the period after the German defeat at Stalingrad through the collapse of German positions in France in 1944. The book reproduces photographs, articles, and wartime propaganda from the English-language editions of Signal. 
The book shows how Nazi propaganda changed during the years when Germany was losing the war. Earlier Signal editions from 1940–42 celebrated rapid German victories and military power, but the 1943–44 issues increasingly tried to explain defeats, maintain morale, and exaggerate minor successes. The publication mixed battlefield reports with stories about German civilian life, technology, culture, and supposed “normality” inside the Reich even while Allied bombing intensified. 
A major theme is the growing gap between propaganda and reality. As German armies retreated in North Africa, Italy, and the Eastern Front, Signal attempted to present these setbacks as temporary or strategic. The tone became more defensive and less triumphant, while anti-Soviet messaging and claims about defending “European civilization” became more prominent. 
The original Signal magazine itself was one of Nazi Germany’s most important propaganda tools. Published by the Wehrmacht between 1940 and 1945, it appeared in up to 25 languages and reached millions of readers across occupied and neutral countries. It was known for high-quality photography and modern magazine design modelled partly on magazines like Life. 
Historically, the book is valuable not because it presents accurate wartime reporting, but because it reveals how the Nazi regime tried to shape public perception during military decline. It provides insight into wartime propaganda techniques, visual journalism, and the psychological effort to sustain support for Germany as defeat became increasingly unavoidable.

As New: Same condition as a new, unread book. In perfect condition
Fine: Book or dust jacket that is not quite a crisp as a as new book
Very good: A read book. Minimal wear to book / dust jacket. No tears on either binding or paper. No marks or highlighting of text, may have identifying marks on inside cover. 
Good: Describes the average used book that has all its pages or leaves. Light foxing or age toning may be present. Dust jacket may be missing, cover and binding may have wear. Majority of pages are undamaged. May have creasing or tearing and pencil underlining of text. No permanent highlighting to text or writing in margins. 
Fair: Describes a worn book that has complete text pages (including those with maps or plates), May lack end papers, half title page, etc. Binding and jacket may also be worn
