Spirit of ST Louis Ryan Monoplane 1927 by Leo Marriott
VINTAGESTAN BOOKS Title: Spirit of ST Louis Ryan Monoplane 1927 by Leo Marriott. Haynes Owners Workshop Manual Summary: Leo Marriott’s book tells the story of the Ryan NYP “Spirit of St. Louis”, the aircraft built for Charles Lindbergh’s attempt to fly nonstop from New York to Paris in 1927. Lindbergh wanted a lightweight, reliable aircraft capable of carrying enough fuel for the long Atlantic crossing. Ryan Airlines, working with designer Donald Hall, built the aircraft in an exceptionally short time. To reduce weight, many items normally considered important were removed, including a radio and parachute. The aircraft was powered by a Wright J-5C Whirlwind radial engine. On 20 May 1927, Lindbergh took off from Roosevelt Field, New York. After flying for about 33½ hours and more than 3,600 miles, he landed at Le Bourget, Paris. He had completed the first solo nonstop transatlantic flight, winning the $25,000 Orteig Prize and becoming an international celebrity. Marriott's book goes beyond the famous flight. It explains the design, construction and operation of the Ryan monoplane, including its airframe, engine and unusual features. It also discusses the later replica Spirit of St. Louis, its transatlantic journey 85 years after Lindbergh, and the experience of flying and maintaining the aircraft.
