Title: Spritsail Barges of Thames and Medway by Edgar J. March

Summary: The book documents the development, construction, rigging, working lives, and decline of Thames and Medway spritsail barges. The author combines historical research with detailed descriptions and illustrations, making the book valuable both as a maritime history and as a record of traditional boatbuilding. The Thames and Medway barges were highly specialized machines developed through generations of practical experience. Their apparently simple design concealed a sophisticated understanding of tides, shallow-water navigation, cargo carrying, sail handling and local geography.

The book is especially valuable because March records technical details, vessel types, dimensions, builders, rigs and working practices that might otherwise have disappeared. It therefore serves as both a history of the Thames sailing-barge trade and an important reference work for maritime historians, model makers, traditional boat enthusiasts and anyone interested in Britain's commercial sailing era.
