Summary: The story of Martin Van Buren's rise from pot-boy in his father's tavern, in Kinderhook, N.Y., to eighth president of the United States, is known to very few. He lacks immortality even as he lacked, through his whole political career, sufficient courage or conviction to champion any cause for its own sake, instead of regarding it as a political stepping stone. Hence it is now strangely ironic that his precepts remain when his name is almost forgotten. For it was he who developed the "spoils" system, and he who built up Tammany as a power, and it was he, the "Little Magician," who converted statesmanship into politics.

No life of Van Buren, however, can be other than a history of the period in which he lived, and "Matty Van" lived to be eighty-odd, and knew everyone who could have been of any service to him.
