VINTAGESTAN BOOKS Title: The Catalogue of English Printed Books 1595. Edited by D. F. Foxon 1965. English Bibliographical Sources. Series 2. Catalogues of books in circulation Summary: The Catalogue of English Printed Books (1595) is a facsimile edition, edited by D. F. Foxon and published by Gregg Press in 1965. It reproduces the important bibliography originally compiled by the Elizabethan bookseller Andrew Maunsell in 1595. Maunsell's catalogue was one of the earliest major attempts to provide a systematic record of books printed in English. His purpose was practical as well as scholarly: booksellers and readers were increasingly unable to remember or identify books that had gone out of circulation, and the catalogue was intended to make this printed material easier to find. The original work appeared in two parts: The First Part concerned mainly with Divinity and religious works. The Second Part covered science and related subjects, including arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, astrology, music, navigation, the art of war, medicine and surgery. Maunsell arranged entries principally alphabetically by authors' names, but he also used subject headings for books whose authors might not be known or for groups of related works. Cross-references helped readers move between subject headings and authors. This combination of author and subject arrangement made the catalogue an important early development in bibliographical organisation. Foxon's 1965 edition is valuable because it makes this rare sixteenth-century catalogue available to modern scholars in facsimile form. The original 1595 catalogue is important evidence for the Elizabethan book trade, showing what kinds of books were being printed, circulated and sought by readers at the end of the sixteenth century. It is therefore useful not only to bibliographers but also to historians of printing, publishing, bookselling, reading and early modern intellectual culture. Edited by: D. F.
