VINTAGESTAN BOOKS

Title: The Collective Naval Defence of the Empire 1900 to 1940

Summary: The book is a collection of high-level policy documents covering how the Royal Navy and the wider British Empire attempted to organise “collective naval defence” between 1900 and 1940.

It addresses Britain’s challenge of defending its vast maritime empire at a time when:

New maritime powers were rising.

Financial/industrial circumstances for Britain were increasingly constrained (i.e., “imperial overstretch”).

The overall aim: to show how Britain and its dominions tried to distribute naval defence burdens, form alliances, and adapt strategy to changing global naval realities.
