Title: The Family of Love in English Society 1550 to 1630 by Christopher W. Marsh

Summary: The Family of Love was a mystical religious fellowship active in England between the mid-16th and early 17th centuries. Its followers were known as Familists and derived their beliefs from the teachings of a Dutch mystic often referred to as H. N. (Hendrik Niclaes).

Marsh’s book traces the history of this outlawed sect within English society, exploring how its members lived, worshipped, and were perceived by contemporaries.

Although few in number and very secretive, Familists have been identified in a variety of settings, from the court of Elizabeth I to rural parishes such as those in Cambridgeshire.

The book examines Familist beliefs and practices, including their mystical emphasis on personal spiritual perfection and their distinctive internal community life.

Marsh also analyses how wider English society interacted with and responded to them. While officially hostile to such religious dissent, society often tolerated known heretics in practice, revealing a surprising degree of social tolerance in early modern England.

Structurally, the work combines social history, religious history, and “detective” scholarship, using a wide range of documentary evidence to reconstruct the lives of individuals and the spread of the movement.
