The book explains how nationalism, territorial disputes, religion, colonialism, and competition for political influence contributed to repeated conflicts in the region. It describes the background to the creation of Israel in 1948, followed by the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, when Israel fought armies from several neighbouring Arab states. Westwood then discusses the Suez Crisis of 1956, when Britain, France and Israel became involved in a conflict with Egypt after Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser nationalised the Suez Canal. The crisis demonstrated the declining influence of the European colonial powers and the growing importance of the United States and Soviet Union in Middle Eastern affairs. The book also covers the Six-Day War of 1967, in which Israel fought Egypt, Jordan and Syria and captured territories including the Sinai Peninsula, Gaza Strip, West Bank, East Jerusalem and Golan Heights. The consequences of the war became a major source of later political and territorial disputes. Another important conflict is the Yom Kippur War of 1973, when Egypt and Syria launched attacks against Israel. Although Israel eventually regained the initiative, the war had significant political consequences and contributed to later Egyptian-Israeli negotiations. Westwood also considers the wider conflicts of the region, including the Lebanese Civil War, Iran–Iraq War, and Gulf conflicts, showing that Middle Eastern warfare was not simply an Arab-Israeli issue.
