The story follows Adam, a teenager whose family is in serious financial difficulty. He discovers a dangerous street drug called Death, which gives users one week of intense happiness, confidence, and energy, but guarantees they will die exactly seven days after taking it. In exchange for agreeing to take Death later, people can receive a large payment immediately, making it tempting for those desperate for money.
Adam becomes involved with Lizzie, a girl with a troubled past who has already agreed to take the drug. As they fall in love, Adam struggles with the knowledge that Lizzie has only days left to live. Determined to save her, he searches for a way to stop the drug's fatal effects, even as powerful people with financial interests in Death stand in his way.
