Title: The life and work of Lucy Kemp-Welch by David Messum
Summary: Lucy Kemp-Welch was one of Britain’s most successful painters of horses and working animals. Born in Bournemouth in 1869, she developed an early fascination with the New Forest, its ponies and rural life. She later studied at Hubert von Herkomer’s art school in Bushey, where she developed the observational skills that became central to her work. 
A major theme of her work was the horse as a working animal rather than merely a sporting or decorative subject. She painted heavy horses, wild ponies, farm horses, circus horses and horses involved in transport and military activity. Her paintings are notable for their sense of movement, physical effort and atmosphere. Messum's later descriptions emphasise her unusual empathy with working horses and her ability to give them a powerful, almost human presence without making them sentimental. 
Kemp-Welch also achieved remarkable recognition at a time when the British art establishment was heavily dominated by men. She became one of the first women elected to the Royal Society of British Artists in 1902 and later became president of the Society of Animal Painters. Despite repeated nominations, however, she was never elected to the Royal Academy.

As New: Same condition as a new, unread book. In perfect condition
Fine: Book or dust jacket that is not quite a crisp as a as new book
Very good: A read book. Minimal wear to book / dust jacket. No tears on either binding or paper. No marks or highlighting of text, may have identifying marks on inside cover. 
Good: Describes the average used book that has all its pages or leaves. Light foxing or age toning may be present. Dust jacket may be missing, cover and binding may have wear. Majority of pages are undamaged. May have creasing or tearing and pencil underlining of text. No permanent highlighting to text or writing in margins. 
Fair: Describes a worn book that has complete text pages (including those with maps or plates), May lack end papers, half title page, etc. Binding and jacket may also be worn
Poor: Book shows considerable wear, only merit is as a reading copy. Book or dust jacket listed as poor may be soiled; scuffed, stained, book may have loose joints, hinges, pages etc.  
Ex-Library: Former library copy. May have marks and stamps.
