Title: The Lincolnshire Domesday and Lindsey Survey. The Lincoln Record Society Vol 19 for the year ending 30 September 1921

Summary: The Lincolnshire Domesday and the Lindsey Survey is a landmark source publication that presents an English translation and edition of two key medieval records relating to Lincolnshire:

The Lincolnshire section of the Domesday Book (1086), commissioned by William the Conqueror.

The Lindsey Survey (c. 1115–1118), an early twelfth-century fiscal survey of the district of Lindsey in northern Lincolnshire.

Main themes and significance

  • The book makes the often-difficult Latin records accessible through modern English translation and explanatory notes.
  • It allows historians to compare Lincolnshire's landholding, population, taxation, and economic conditions between the late eleventh century and the early twelfth century.
  • The Lindsey Survey is particularly valuable because it records tax assessments and administrative arrangements shortly after the Domesday survey, helping scholars trace continuity and change in local government and land tenure.

The Domesday entries provide details of:

  • Manors and estates.
  • Landowners before and after the Norman Conquest.
  • Population groups such as villeins, bordars, and slaves.
  • Agricultural resources, mills, fisheries, meadows, and woodland.
  • The taxable value of estates and their economic productivity.

These records offer a snapshot of Lincolnshire as one of the wealthiest and most densely settled counties in medieval England.

The Lindsey Survey records:

  • Fiscal assessments for the district of Lindsey.
  • Holdings and obligations of tenants.
  • Administrative units and taxation arrangements.
  • Evidence for the evolution of local government after 1086.
