Title: The Milne Papers. The papers of Admiral of the Fleet Sir Alexander Milne. Volume 2. 1860 to 1862

Summary: This volume is centred on Sir Alexander Milne’s role as Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Navy’s North America & West Indies Station, from February 1860 to early 1862.

It highlights the routine peacetime operations of the Victorian Royal Navy, not dramatic battles, but the day-to-day work that actually formed much of its activity.

Through Milne’s papers, the book provides insight into how the Navy supported broader British political and economic goals (especially trade), rather than just purely military missions.

It’s also valuable for scholars of international relations, especially Anglo-American diplomacy, because it captures how naval power underpinned and enforced political and economic strategies.
