Title: The Morgans. Private International Bankers 1854 to 1913

Summary: The Morgans is a comprehensive business history of the House of Morgan, tracing the development of one of the most powerful private banking families and firms in the world from 1854 through 1913. It’s based on extensive archival research, including previously unpublished Morgan business records and private papers.

Carosso’s study isn’t just about one family. It maps the integration of global capital markets, demonstrates how private banking shaped economic and political developments of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and helps explain the shift from traditional merchant banking to more modern commercial and investment banking practices.
