VINTAGESTAN BOOKS

Title: The Naval Annual 1904 Edited by T.A. Brassey

Summary: This is the 1904 volume of the long-running annual reference series known as the Brassey’s Naval Annual

Its purpose is to provide a comprehensive survey of naval matters: ship-construction, comparative naval strength, foreign navies, naval policy, armaments and armour, and related topics.

While a full detailed table of contents would require the physical volume, the book includes major sections such as:

  • Naval Administration & Policy: Discussion on how navies are managed and organised, suggestions for improvement. (Typical of the series.)
  • The British Navy: A review of the state, development, and programme of the Royal Navy.
  • Foreign Navies: Coverage of other major navies (French, Russian, German, Italian, etc.), their fleets, ship-programmes, developments.
  • Comparative Strengths: Tables and commentary that compare navies — numbers of ships, classes, tonnages, speeds, armaments.
  • Machinery, Armour & Ordnance: Technical treatments on warship design, propulsion, armour types, ordnance calibres & performance.
  • Ship Lists and Plans: Listings of British and foreign ships, with plans/illustrations of selected vessels (for example the French battleship Henri IV, the French cruiser Sully).
  • Naval Estimates and Budgetary Matters: Figures on expenditure, ship-building programmes, forecasts.
