VINTAGESTAN BOOKS

Title: The Naval Miscellany Volume VI

Summary: This volume collects 30 letters written by Cuthbert Collingwood, 1st Baron Collingwood (1748-1810) during the years 1794–1809.

The originals are in Collingwood’s own handwriting.

The letters are addressed mainly to two correspondents:

  • Edward Collingwood (1734-1806) of Chirton, the Admiral’s third cousin and his nearest male relative of the name.
  • Walter Spencer-Stanhope (1750-1821), MP, whose wife was the niece and heiress of Edward Collingwood.

The first letter describes the battle of the Glorious First of June (19 May 1794).

The last letter is from his flagship in Port Mahon, Minorca, less than three months before his death in 1810.

The volume focuses on personal and official correspondence throughout the Napoleonic era, offering insights into Collingwood’s character, command style, the Royal Navy’s operations, and the wider strategic context of the period.
