Summary of the story
Amy has spent around a decade living in London, where her life becomes increasingly dominated by alcohol addiction. Her drinking affects her relationships, work and sense of self, eventually leading her to enter rehabilitation.
After leaving rehab, she returns to Orkney, the remote place where she grew up. At first, returning home is complicated: she has mixed feelings about her childhood, her parents and the island itself. Her father lives with serious mental illness, while her mother is deeply religious, and Amy has long felt the desire to escape the restrictions of island life. 
In Orkney, however, Amy begins to rebuild her life. She spends increasing amounts of time walking, swimming in the sea, observing wildlife and studying the landscape and weather. She also works with the RSPB, helping to monitor rare corncrakes, and later spends a winter on the small island of Papa Westray. 
The book moves between memories of her childhood, her chaotic years in London, and her experiences during recovery. Rather than presenting recovery as a simple or immediate transformation, Liptrot shows it as an ongoing process involving cravings, loneliness, self-reflection and learning to live differently.
